In a statement, NATO has confirmed that Bagram air base, located next to the ancient city of Bagram in the eastern Parwan Province, was attacked on Saturday night.

According to the Western military alliance, the assault left no casualties.

The Taliban terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying outgoing US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel was at the base when it was targeted by rockets.

Bagram is home to thousands of US military personnel and civilian contractors.

The airbase has come under numerous rocket attacks since it was set up by the US army after it invaded Afghanistan more than eleven years ago.

The militants have recently stepped up their attacks against the Afghan troops, foreign forces, and civilians.

The group has vowed to escalate the attacks on Afghan forces and US-led troops, their bases, diplomatic missions and vehicle convoys before the foreign forces partially exit the country at the end of 2014.

There are currently more than 41,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan, including some 29,000 US forces.
